Know Different Types of Insomnia

Insomnia or sleeplessness as it is commonly known is a small understood affliction. In fact, you will find that sleep disorder is both a symptom and a malady by itself – and hence, its diagnosis is a bit troublesome. There have been so many myths and fables connecting to insomnia. If you are suffering from this condition, it is really very vital to get the right information on insomnia to know and treat your condition well. If you have been suffering from lack of sleep and do not have any thought what to do about your situation, it would be a excellent thought to seek information on sleep disorder from reliable sources such medical journals, your doctor or from websites of reputable organizations.

When you consult your doctor about your sleeping problems, you should question him or her to discuss the different aspects of this disorder. When discussing information on insomnia with your doctor, you should also question about the different options of treating the disorder. Note that natural treatments are generally preferred over the sleeping drugs available in the market. The natural treatments do not have the unwanted side effects like those of the pharmaceutical drugs. The natural treatment process is cost effective too. Another way of getting reliable information on sleep disorder is to go online and browse through some websites. When you do this, make sure that you only use websites of organizations that are authoritative on the topic.

Insomnia or lack of sleep can be of two types, i.e. (i) transient and (ii) intermittent. The former is when one experiences sleeplessness for a period of maximum 2-3 weeks; while the intermittent insomnia is when this gets repeated every now and then. This will mostly be a projection of an underlying problem, such as anxiety, depression, drug abuse, etc.

Childhood Insomnia

Sleep disorder is something that affects the ancient and young alike. Studies have shown that childhood insomnia has continuously risen all over the United States in the past few years. Experts attribute the increase in cases of childhood sleep disorder to many factors at home, school and the neighborhood. If you have a child who is struggling with childhood insomnia, you should try to help your child get some sleep. The first thing that you need to do to help your child get some sleep is to find out what is keeping him or her awake at night. If your child could not sleep because of some unfounded dread, you should try to be patient with him.

Children have very rich imaginations and the things which you reckon are so unreasonable and unreal, could be very real for them. Never for one moment belittle your child’s dread. One of the best ways to place a child to sleep is to read them some gentle and soothing bedtime tales. The soothing sound of your voice really helps cure childhood insomnia. The human body responds well to schedules and rhythm. To help your child overcome childhood insomnia, you should set a specific time for your child to go to bed.

Hyper Insomnia

Generally speaking, there are two major types of insomnia, i.e. acute sleep disorder and chronic insomnia or hyper insomnia. You will know that you are suffering from acute insomnia when you cannot sleep because of some apparent reason like noise, bright light, too much of heat or cold, incoming illness, recovering from illness, uncomfortable bed, and so on. The other causes of acute sleep disorder are erratic sleeping schedules, i.e. working on night shifts, working late night, watching TV which interferes with the body’s normal biological clock. Normally, removing the irritants and minor home remedies would be sufficient to cure this type of insomnia.

The hyper insomnia or chronic insomnia is quite hard to manage or cure. This is usually the result of a serious underlying problem, or a disease by itself triggered by some anxiety or serious health problem (which could be neurological, medical and/or psychiatric). Most of the times, the hyper insomnia would be connected with some psychiatric problem or other and hence would require long and careful tests for proper diagnosis. Reports show that hyper insomnia accounts for more than 45 percent of the cases.

The other major cause for hyper insomnia is drug abuse, not necessarily narcotics. There are many drugs some as innocent as decongestants and antidepressants that can cause long term insomnia. The other culprits could be coffee (and any caffeine consisting drinks), steroids (prescribed by the doctor), beta blockers, and even sleeping pills (withdrawal symptoms when they are discontinued). It is best to take medical advice and treatment for hyper insomnia.

Chronic Insomnia

Chronic sleep disorder is a complicated condition in which the patient has difficulty in sleeping or getting refreshing sleep for more than a month. Depression is a major cause of chronic insomnia. Other causes include diseases like arthritis, heart problems, kidney problems, respiratory diseases, Parkinson’s disease, hyperthyroidism, sleep apnea, and several other conditions. Constant experience of mental stress and excessive use of stimulants like caffeine (coffee, tea etc.) are also responsible for causing chronic insomnia.

Treatment of chronic sleep disorder consists of diagnosing and eliminating the underlying medical/psychological disorders. Stopping or minimizing behaviors that aggravate sleep disorder are also part of the treatment plans. Sleeping pills may be prescribed by the physician for temporary use but they are not allowed for long-term use. Different behavioral techniques are employed to treat chronic insomnia. These include techniques like relaxation therapy, sleep restriction therapy, reconditioning, and using bright light.

I have had insomnia since age 13, now 31- have not slept through the night since 13 and I have been diagnosed with ADD, anxiety disorder and bipolar disorder but I reckon my insomnia is the root- I had asthma as a child and was on theophylline, steroids albuterol, etc. I would also feel as though I was falling reight before falling asleep, and would have episodes were I could see everything in my room but could not go-aware that I was asleep but felt as though I was being tickled and would try so hard to go to make myself wake up- have you heard of this before?? one last thing, i have episodes were my insomnia gets worse by the day and by day 3 I hallucinate, feel disconnected have diarrhea, like my body is shutting down.

How to Cure Insomnia Naturally – Learn How to Cure Insomnia Naturally

 What Is Insomnia?

Insomnia is the perception or complaint ofinadequate or poor-quality sleep because ofone or more of the following:

difficulty falling asleep
waking up frequently during the nightwith difficulty returning to sleepn
waking up too early in the morning
unrefreshing sleep

Insomnia is not defined by the number ofhours of sleep a person gets or how long ittakes to fall asleep. Individuals vary normallyin their need for, and their satisfactionwith, sleep. Insomnia may cause problemsduring the day, such as tiredness, a lack ofenergy, difficulty concentrating, and irritability.

Insomnia can be classified as transient (shortterm), intermittent (on and off), and chronic(constant). Insomnia lasting from a singlenight to a few weeks is referred to as transient. If episodes of transient insomniaoccur from time to time, the insomnia is saidto be intermittent. Insomnia is consideredto be chronic if it occurs on most nights andlasts a month or more.

What Causes Insomnia ?

Certain conditions seem to make individualsmore likely to experience insomnia.Examples of these conditions include:n advanced age (insomnia occurs more frequentlyin those over age 60)n female gendern a history of depressionIf other conditions (such as stress, anxiety, amedical problem, or the use of certain medications)occur along with the above conditions, insomnia is more likely

Treatments For Insomnia

Insomnia is not a disease but a disorder caused by other problems. Before you can find a cure for insomnia, you have to learn to deal with your problems. Whether the cause is stress, depression, or other reasons, you will probably need to discus your sleep issues with a doctor. They prescribe medications or treatments that will help with anxiety and depression. But, be aware that these medications, if taken over extended periods of time, may interfere with your sleep as well and could be addictive. Medications may have side effects such as drowsiness and lack of focus during the day. Remember that insomnia is a symptom brought on by other problems. Medication may prove effective for small term but to get a healthy night’s sleep, you need to find and treat the cause of the problem. Besides your family doctor, a psychologist might be able to help with insomnia. They can give you techniques to help you relax and ease stress.

Other than professional help, there are some common methods you can use to help deal with insomnia. One of the most vital is to keep regular bedtime and waking hours. Go to bed at the same time every night and try to wake up at the same time every morning. What this does is resets your body clock and trains your body to sleep regularly. If your daytime and nighttime hours are erratic, you will naturally have problems sleeping. Try not to nap during the day because that will only throw your body’s clock off. You want to train to sleep for a period of eight hours, not in blocks of a few hours at a time. Avoid napping during the day if you aren’t sleeping at night.

Being healthy is a key to a excellent night’s sleep and exercising can help with that. Try to exercise regularly but do it during the day or several hours before bedtime. Exercising right before bed will only interfere with sleep because your heart rate will be increased and it will only keep you awake.

Speaking of being healthy, don’t snack right before bedtime. Your last meal should be two or three hours before you go to sleep. Watch what you eat at night, too. A huge, heavy meal at night is more hard to digest. If you eat a huge meal right before you lay down, it can upset your digestive tract. If you are hungry and need a snack before bedtime, eat something healthy like fruit or yogurt. It is also a excellent thought not to drink any liquids before bedtime or else you may have to use the bathroom in the middle of the night which will interrupt your sleep.

Above all else, don’t use excessive amounts of stimulants like caffeine. Too much coffee or sodas during the day (or at night) can make it hard to go to sleep at a decent hour and stay asleep. Energy drinks are also a terrible thought at night. Also, there are some medications such as diet pills and cold medications that really speed up your body’s metabolism. These medications will only interfere with getting to sleep. And never use alcohol as a remedy for insomnia. While moderate amounts of alcohol might make you relaxed, the continued use of alcohol will only end up having the opposite effect by keeping you up at night. As your body adjusts to the alcohol levels in your blood, you will have to consume more in order to get drowsy enough to get to sleep. Before too long, the alcohol will become a problem all its own.

There are alternative treatments also available to cure insomnia naturally a part from medications and other over the counter treatments.

How To Detect Insomnia Symptoms: 10 Symptoms To Watch

Posted: Sep 21, 2010 |

]]>

Many known insomnia symptoms can be misconstrued as insomnia, when in some cases, they in fact are not. It’s a fact, but, that all insomnia symptoms are symptoms of sleep deprivation. After all, insomnia is sleep deprivation.

Lying in bed failing to fall asleep.

Oftentimes, people with anxiety disorders suffer from this. They spend a lot of time awake in bed unable to fall asleep. Feelings get in the way of sleeping. Worrying and dread can both cause sleeplessness.

Being psyched over something can also cause distress sleeping. When people are excited, they can’t seem to fall asleep like kids on the night before Christmas.

Sleeping for a small period of time.

The average sleep duration for adults is 8 hours. Babies sleep nearly more than half the day. Teens need around 9 hours or more. The duration of people’s sleep naturally decrease with age.

Sleeping for a small period of time shouldn’t always be counted as one of many insomnia symptoms. But, if a person who sleeps for say – 4 hours does not feel refreshed after sleep. It’s probably insomnia.

Being awake most of the night.

Being awake at night is a characteristic of “night people” or owls. They tend to stay up late for no reason and are usually more comfortable working in the wee hours of the night. If only they have the luxury of time and can sleep and wake up when they want to, they’d get enough sleep.

But, restrictions of work and study schedules exist. Night people working or studying during the day do end up sleep deprived.

Early morning awakening.

As it’s right for owls, it is also right for larks or “day people.” Studies have shown that the human sleep-wake cycle can be hereditary. An entire family sleeps at around 7:00PM and wakes really early in the morning. In cases like this, early morning awakening isn’t one of the many insomnia symptoms.

Older people may experience this which is related to the amount of sleep people need as they age. It is only considered insomnia if the person experiences other insomnia symptoms like feeling sleepy or tired during the day.

Middle of the night awakening and failing to get back to sleep.

There are insomniacs who wake up in the middle of the night and just can’t get back to sleep. Some can get back to sleep, but they wake up again after some time.

Patients who suffer from chronic pain are examples. If this is the case, insomnia goes away after the other medical condition is treated.

Fatigue

To wake up exhausted is not a feeling many people can stand. Supposedly, after a excellent night’s rest, a person feels refreshed and energetic. Among other symptoms of insomnia, fatigue is often a symptom of chronic cases or prolonged periods of insomnia.

Irritability

A person is irritable, usually, when they feel unwell. Sleep deprivation can cause a person to feel and be that way.

Sleepiness

Well, if a person does not get enough sleep, they do feel sleepy. Insomnia accounts for many instances wherein workers fall asleep in the workplace or children fall asleep in class.

It becomes perilous to the insomniac and the people around them if a sleepy individual drives. Sleepy drivers often end up in accidents. In many fatal accidents, the driver falls asleep behind the wheel. In the workplace, sleepy workers are involved in twice as much accidents compared to those that get enough sleep.

Depression

Insomnia can be a symptom of depression and depression can also be a symptom of insomnia.

The danger in depression is that it can eventually lead to suicide. Insomnia per se, can’t kill, but severe depression can make a person kill or reckon of killing himself.

Impaired mental function

Not getting enough sleep leaves the brain unable to recharge. This leads to memory loss and difficulty in concentrating.

Headaches or migraines

Following countless sleepless nights, a person can experience headaches and migraines.

These are the 10 symptoms of insomnia. If a person goes through several of these symptoms, it’s certainly insomnia.
