How To Detect Insomnia Symptoms: 10 Symptoms To Watch

Posted: Sep 21, 2010 |

]]>

Many known insomnia symptoms can be misconstrued as insomnia, when in some cases, they in fact are not. It’s a fact, but, that all insomnia symptoms are symptoms of sleep deprivation. After all, insomnia is sleep deprivation.

Lying in bed failing to fall asleep.

Oftentimes, people with anxiety disorders suffer from this. They spend a lot of time awake in bed unable to fall asleep. Feelings get in the way of sleeping. Worrying and dread can both cause sleeplessness.

Being psyched over something can also cause distress sleeping. When people are excited, they can’t seem to fall asleep like kids on the night before Christmas.

Sleeping for a small period of time.

The average sleep duration for adults is 8 hours. Babies sleep nearly more than half the day. Teens need around 9 hours or more. The duration of people’s sleep naturally decrease with age.

Sleeping for a small period of time shouldn’t always be counted as one of many insomnia symptoms. But, if a person who sleeps for say – 4 hours does not feel refreshed after sleep. It’s probably insomnia.

Being awake most of the night.

Being awake at night is a characteristic of “night people” or owls. They tend to stay up late for no reason and are usually more comfortable working in the wee hours of the night. If only they have the luxury of time and can sleep and wake up when they want to, they’d get enough sleep.

But, restrictions of work and study schedules exist. Night people working or studying during the day do end up sleep deprived.

Early morning awakening.

As it’s right for owls, it is also right for larks or “day people.” Studies have shown that the human sleep-wake cycle can be hereditary. An entire family sleeps at around 7:00PM and wakes really early in the morning. In cases like this, early morning awakening isn’t one of the many insomnia symptoms.

Older people may experience this which is related to the amount of sleep people need as they age. It is only considered insomnia if the person experiences other insomnia symptoms like feeling sleepy or tired during the day.

Middle of the night awakening and failing to get back to sleep.

There are insomniacs who wake up in the middle of the night and just can’t get back to sleep. Some can get back to sleep, but they wake up again after some time.

Patients who suffer from chronic pain are examples. If this is the case, insomnia goes away after the other medical condition is treated.

Fatigue

To wake up exhausted is not a feeling many people can stand. Supposedly, after a excellent night’s rest, a person feels refreshed and energetic. Among other symptoms of insomnia, fatigue is often a symptom of chronic cases or prolonged periods of insomnia.

Irritability

A person is irritable, usually, when they feel unwell. Sleep deprivation can cause a person to feel and be that way.

Sleepiness

Well, if a person does not get enough sleep, they do feel sleepy. Insomnia accounts for many instances wherein workers fall asleep in the workplace or children fall asleep in class.

It becomes perilous to the insomniac and the people around them if a sleepy individual drives. Sleepy drivers often end up in accidents. In many fatal accidents, the driver falls asleep behind the wheel. In the workplace, sleepy workers are involved in twice as much accidents compared to those that get enough sleep.

Depression

Insomnia can be a symptom of depression and depression can also be a symptom of insomnia.

The danger in depression is that it can eventually lead to suicide. Insomnia per se, can’t kill, but severe depression can make a person kill or reckon of killing himself.

Impaired mental function

Not getting enough sleep leaves the brain unable to recharge. This leads to memory loss and difficulty in concentrating.

Headaches or migraines

Following countless sleepless nights, a person can experience headaches and migraines.

These are the 10 symptoms of insomnia. If a person goes through several of these symptoms, it’s certainly insomnia.
