Sleep apnea deprives many people of restful sleep

CPAP machines help people with sleep apnea rest simple

Many people suffer from sleep apnea and don’t even know it. This is because sleep apnea happens while the person is asleep, and the only effects people generally feel from it are increased sleepiness. Sleep apnea can cause larger problems though, such as increased blood pressure. Fortunately, it can be treated once diagnosed.

“Apnea” literally translates as “without breath”, which describes what happens during sleep apnea. The soft tissue in the airways relaxes during sleep and restricts breathing. The restriction isn’t enough to make the person wake up, but it does restrict how much oxygen gets to the brain during sleep. This causes the brain to not get the full benefits of sleep.

CPAP Treatment

Fortunately, there are a number of treatments for sleep apnea. Most of them involve a device worn while sleeping which enables air to circulate through a patient’s respiratory system. One of these machines is a CPAP machine. CPAP stands for “continuous positive airway pressure” which accurately describes what the machine does. CPAP machines consist of an air compressor which circulates the air, a mask which goes on the patients face, and a hose which connects the compressor to the mask. When turned on, the compressor circulates air through the mask. This keeps the airways open by keeping a continual flow of air going through the airways.

There is some variation available in the CPAP machines on the market. There are slight variations in the main compressor unit including units that can be used internationally, and ones that come with a 12 volt cigarette adapter. There are also some variations on the mask. Depending on the size and shape of the patient’s head certain straps will fit better than others. There are also cloth CPAP masks which have cloth over the front instead of the common hard plastic.

Question Your Doctor if you reckon You Might Have Sleep Apnea

If you reckon you may have sleep apnea, your primary care physician should be told. Your physician is most qualified to determine what the best course of action would be. If you already have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, there are a number of options for treatment. Even if you already have a CPAP machine there are other replacement CPAP masks you can use for greater comfort. So regardless of your situation, there is a solution for better sleep.

How To Put Your 5 Year Old To Sleep: 3 Easy Ways

Once your child starts school they will be very tired initially.  Even though they may even be exhausted they will feel very excited and not be able to fall asleep quickly.  They may spend up to 40 minutes tossing in their bed and mulling over the events of a new school.

Be understanding towards you child. They have new names to learn, new routines to learn and new things to learn in school.  This is a lot for a young 5 year ancient child to take in all at once!  So that they make the most of their new school environment here are three simple ways to ensure your 5 year ancient gets enough sleep.

1.    Make bedtime something to look forward to. Once all the usual bed-time routines are out of the way, make something special for your child to do just before they go to sleep.  You could play quietly with your child for 10 minutes just before they sleep.  You could read their favourite book which usually puts you to sleep quicker than your child.  Or you could draw the day’s events in a special diary.

2.    Reward your child. Perhaps you can have a “sleep chart” hanging on their wall.  After they have gone to sleep every night without fuss or complaints have them tick off that day. At the end of the week you can reward your child by letting them stay extra long at the playground or buying them a special treat.

3.    Clarify the benefits of sleep.  So you are not the mean parent who forces them into bed each night, clarify to your child why they need to sleep.  At 5 years ancient, children know more than we give them credit for. Clarify they need at least 11 hours of sleep each night.  And that the more hours they sleep before midnight, the better their quality of sleep. Clarify to your child that without deep and restful sleep, they would not be able to function properly. Your child will then have a new appreciation and awareness why they need to sleep.

These 3 ways will enable your 5 year ancient to go to sleep quietly and willingly. Don’t make bedtime seem like a punishment or a chore.  Frame bedtime as a special time where your child gets to drift into dreamland and have wonderful adventures.
